CHEVROLET / GM 6.2L VIN J V8 ECOTEC3 L86 ENGINE

Posted on August 11, 2021 by promarengine

Promar Engines continues to lead the industry in research and development being one of the first manufacturers to build the 6.2L L86 Ecotec3 engine. Ecotec (Emissions Control Optimization TEChnology’ is a General Motors (GM) trademark that refers to a series of emissions technologies that were implemented throughout a range of GM engines. The most popular version of this engine is the Ecotec3. Ecotec3 is the name used on General Motors’ Small Block Gen 5 Engines. All include direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing, either in V6 form of 4.3L or V8 form of either 5.3 or 6.2 liters.

This article focuses on the 6.2 L EcoTec3 (VIN Code “J”) engine. The L86 is an LT1 engine modified for truck use with a compression ratio of 11.5 to 1. The engine is rated at a peak 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, which are relatively high output ratings for a naturally aspirated engine that displaces 376 cubic inches, the result of the engine’s relatively high compression ratio. Due to the high compression ratio, the engine is required to run on a minimum 91 octane gasoline to avoid detonation/knocking.

As always, Promar puts these engines through our rigorous manufacturing process and they are assembled with the industries best parts including a new OEM Cam Phaser/VVT, Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifters and Melling oil pump.
